It was these formative years, surfing anything the ocean could throw at him, which helped to shape him into the surfer that he is today – powerful, stylish and explosive on the face, with a mix of flair and progression above the lip – a perfect match for JR Surfboards.
Now residing in Currumbin – nice and close to JR’s shaping bay – Dion has been working closely with Jason over the past four years, inclusive of his first year on the WSL Championship Tour in 2014. After many years as one of the most respected, feared and competitive surfers on the Qualifying Series, Donny made the CT cut in 2014, with his performances at Snapper Rocks and Teahupo’o being the standout – showcasing not only his diverse talents as a surfer, but also JR’s impressive shaping range, as his boards threw buckets at Snapper and held perfectly amongst Teahupo’o’s instensity. Right now, Donny is slugging it out at the top of the Qualifying Series rankings to regain his rightful position amongst the world’s top 32.
Four years with Donny in the JR stable has seen the development of his signature model, a board that reflects his style of surfing. The Donny is a beautifully balanced, fast, responsive, performance-oriented short board that suits point breaks, hollow beachies and reef passes from 1 to 6 foot. The JR range now includes The Donny Stretch model, for those pumping days where you need a little extra length and refinement, but still want to surf like Donny.
“Jason is very open-minded. I can bring him any idea that I have and he’s comfortable throwing whatever he thinks at me. We’ve got my boards so dialed through this process that I know exactly what to expect from any board we create. In my Donny model in particular, all of the foam and volume is right where I want it to be and I never feel like I am forcing anything! His Tri-Flex Tech has given me life and froth in small waves. Roddy is so approachable in and out of the shaping bay, he’s got absolutely no ego. I recommend anyone to go and talk to Roddy, and bring some ideas to the table and you’ll definitely end up with a magic stick!”
